Meaning: The surname seems to be of Greek origin - source CM = A Classical Manual, Being a Mythological, Historical, and Geographical Commentary on Pope's Homer, and Dryden's Æneid of Virgil, 1833, p. 12. Horcius - (Gr.) name of Zeus as presiding over the solemnity of oaths. As explained in Odes of Pindar, Horcius derived from Horcus, an oath, in old Greek. It originates from the old Greek god Jupiter Horcius. The statue of Jupiter Horcius was placed in the senate house of the Eieaus, and was formed to strike terror into wicked men. The Elians had an ancient tradition ascribing their origin to Jupiter. Horcius, is in the Greek mythology, the god who watches over oaths, or is invoked in oaths, and punishes their violation, and the name occurs chiefly as a surname of Zeus - Zeus Horcius. Other sources find that HORCUS is the the personification of an oath, and it is described by Hesiod as the son of Eris, and the avenger of perjury. (Theog. 231, Op. 209 ; Herod. vi. 86. § 3.)
