Dariush Borbor says: Bōrbōr (بوربور) is one of the oldest and the biggest of still existing ancient tribes with close affinity to the original migration and settlement of the Aryans in the central Zagros on the Iranian plateau. In spite of the existence of a series of comprehensible long gaps in the history of the tribe due to its longevity, there are nonetheless, substantial available testimonies and circumstantial evidence to support the kinship of the existing Bōrbōr tribal name with the identical names which have come down to us through Kassite and Neo-Assyrian literature. The one and only concentration of the nomenclature located in a specific area of the western central Zagros in ancient, medieval and modern times diminishes the likelihood of perchance affiliation to the minimum.The name Bōrbōr represents the reduplicated form of the lexeme bōr which is also found in Pahlavi bēwarbēwar “literally: 10,000 × 10,000, myriads; very many; huge number”, Sogdian Manichaean barēbar “ten thousand; myriad”, Armenian biwrbiwr, New Persian *bōrbōr in the name Bōrbōr “myriads; very many, huge number”, Lorī and Kurdish borbor “group by group; huge crowd, multitude”. The addition of numbers to tribal names has been a frequent practice in Iran from the ancient times, the epithet in this case has been due to the large and extensive numbers. The name Bōrbōr has often been mistakenly transcribed or pronounced as Borbor (بربر mostly by the Turkic speaking population), Barbar/Berber, Yurbur/Yūrbūr/Yōrbōr (یوربور), or other forms.
