Meaning of this name is unknown.
Claude Konqui says: The name originated from the Spanish town of Cuenca (La Mancha). in 1492 the Jews of Spain were expelled by the Catholic Kings. The Jews of Cuenca who had survived the persecutions by the Inquisition took refuge in North Africa. The original Jewish names of these families were more or less lost and they were designated by the name of their place of origin, thus Conqui. Some who had settled in present-day Gibraltar later became British citizens, and the name was written Conquy. for those who had settled in what is now Algeria, they received French citizenship in 1870. The "K" of the name was rather due to an administrative writing (Alsatians who refused to become subjects of the German Empire after the loss of this French province to Germany weresettled in Algeria and for many of them worked as executives in the French colonial system. They phonetically transcribed by a "K" the /k/ sound of the name. This is at least one of the possible reasons for that unusual "K" spell in the present name. Another one says the "K" is a mere ladino transcription of the sound.
